"I never let my schooling interfere with my education." ~Mark Twain As an English major, I can appreciate the wisdom (or wise-cracks?) in Mark Twain's satirical works. And now as a graphic and web designer, I can certainly appreciate this particular quote. I strongly believe that in a world saturated in information and communication, there is no reason not to know some fact or be capable of some skill as long as you apply yourself. While I love the craft of writing and dedicated my educational career to it in school, I have found my niche in design and have dedicated my life to it. The beauty of studying writing yet ending up in a more design-oriented, marketing career, is that the two disciplines complement each other exceptionally well. What better designer than someone who has studied what certain words and phrases mean in different contexts, what imagery and ideas inspire and motivate people to certain thoughts and actions, and, in a nutshell, how exactly people read what they see? I have worked at a college newspaper during the peak of their "convergence" period into online media and know full well the impact that the web has on how people seek out and absorb information today. I currently work at a small marketing firm and know the vigilance and innovation required to keep existing clients happy, and how to come up with new, low-cost ways of enticing new clients. I've been a part of a student organization that acted as ambassadors between students and alumni on campus, and I understand the professionalism required when representing your organization to one entity, and the creativity required when garnering interest from another. To top it all, every job, hobby or educational pursuit of mine has required hard work, care and attention to detail to get things done, done well, and done on time, and I've always been more than ready to push myself further.
